ITINERARY: This small group adventure encompasses the best that the Red Centre has to offer. Spend three days exploring three iconic sites (Uluru, Kings Canyon and Kata Tjuta) in a single tour. There's a very good reason why Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The park was first added to the list in 1987 when the international community recognised its spectacular geological formations, rare plants and animals and outstanding natural beauty. Your experienced local guide will uncover some of the incredible secrets of the Red Centre with guided commentary, stories and hidden gems that really bring this place to life. We have comfortable double pop-up safari tents that offer a little extra comfort, privacy and security or you can try a traditional swag (sleeping bag covered in canvas) experience. Day 1: Alice Springs to Uluru From Alice Springs we head towards Ayers Rock stopping at the Mt Connor (False Uluru) lookout point overlooking this mighty red mountain and at Curtin Springs for a toilet break before arriving at our campsite for lunch. After lunch we head to the Red Centre Aboriginal Interpretative Cultural Centre. We have the opportunity to learn about the cultural, environmental, historical and geological significance of this very special national park. With anticipation and excitement growing we take a short drive to the base of Uluru as we begin to grasp the sheer size and magnificence of the huge monolith and move closer to explore further. En route to the Mutitjulu waterhole we discover sacred rock art sites in family caves and hear the creation stories of Kuniya and Liru as we continue our hike to Kuniya Piti. From here we drive past sacred sites towards Kantju Gorge where we take in Central Australia's highest waterfall (a true spectacle, especially in the rain), a cave of elders and the oldest pantry in the world. After exploring the world's most impressive rock up close, we retire to take in the panoramic views and witness one of the world's most incredible sunsets while we cook dinner for you to feed your hungry eyes. Meals: Lunch, Dinner. Accommodation: Ayers Rock Coach Campground (Uluru) Basic Swags (shared campsite facilities). Driving Distance: 350km. Walking Distance: 2-3km / 2-3 hours. Day 2: Uluru to Kings Canyon via Kata Tjuta We rise early and enjoy a light breakfast as we head off to see a spectacular sunrise in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. You thought Uluru was special and just when you think it couldn't get more majestic, we approach the stunning silhouette of Kata Tjuta. Here we set off for a hike through the Valley of the Winds or Walpa Gorge and marvel at the mighty conglomerate rock formations. After exploring Kata Tjuta we head to the Kings Canyon region, just in time to catch a magnificent outback sunset followed by a hearty meal around the campfire. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Accommodation: Kings Canyon Campground Basic Swags (shared campsite facilities). Driving distance: 406km (4.5 hours). Walking distance: 2-6km / 2-4 hours (*weather dependent). Day 3: Kings Canyon to Uluru/to Ayers Rock/Yulara or Alice Springs. We set off early to explore the mighty Kings Canyon (Watarrka), venturing into the ancient landscape and sacred sites of the Ulpanyali and Lilla people. As we reach the crown jewel at the centre of Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon), we are surrounded by 100m high rock walls, views of sandstone gorges and a stunning backdrop that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Bring water, a hat and sturdy shoes as we set off on foot to explore the canyon (the most suitable part depending on the time of year) in more detail. On the way back to Alice Springs, your final destination, your coach will travel along the main road to your final destination, occasionally using the Mereenie Loop Tourist Drive (if access is permitted) or the Ernest Giles Road or Stuart Highway depending on which vehicle is being used on the day. Return to Alice Springs around 5:30-6:00pm. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner Driving distance: 250km (2.5 hours). Walking distance: 2-4km / 2-4 hours.
